Decorative concrete

Exposed Aggregate Concrete in Macomb & Oakland County

A durable, textured, slip-resistant finish for patios, walks and entries — built on the same preparation as any structural pour.

Exposed aggregate concrete is a finish where the top layer of cement paste is washed back before it fully sets, revealing the natural stone in the mix. It gives a textured, slip-resistant, naturally colored surface that costs less than stamped concrete, hides wear better than a smooth finish, and holds up well to Michigan freeze-thaw cycles. We install it on patios, walkways, entries and pool-adjacent areas throughout Macomb and Oakland County.

Exposed aggregate is one of the most practical decorative finishes available in this climate. Because the visible surface is stone rather than a thin colored or patterned layer, it does not show scuffs, minor surface wear or dirt the way a smooth or stamped slab can — and the texture gives real traction when the surface is wet.

The finish itself is the last step. Everything under it is built exactly like a structural pour: the old surface is removed, the subgrade is corrected, a compacted aggregate base is installed, and the slab is formed to a grade that sheds water away from the house. Aggregate is exposed with a surface retarder and wash at the right moment, then the slab is cured and sealed.

What to know about exposed aggregate

How the finish is created

A surface retarder slows the very top layer of paste while the slab below sets normally. That top layer is then washed off to reveal the stone. Timing is the whole job — too early and you lose aggregate, too late and it will not open up.

Aggregate and color options

The stone in the mix determines the look, from small rounded pea gravel to larger, more varied blends. We go over the available options so the finish works with the house and existing hardscape.

Traction and comfort

The texture makes exposed aggregate a strong choice around steps, entries and water, where a smooth finish gets slick. It is coarser underfoot than a broom finish, which is worth knowing if the area is used barefoot.

Sealing and maintenance

A penetrating sealer protects the surface and can deepen the stone color. Resealing on a regular schedule keeps the appearance consistent and helps the surface resist road salt and water intrusion.

What it costs

Exposed aggregate concrete

$15–$20 per sq. ft.

Typical pricing for projects of approximately 1,000 sq. ft. or more. Smaller projects are priced individually, and there is a $2,500 minimum for concrete installation projects. Decorative finish that washes back the surface paste to reveal the natural stone in the mix.

This is a general budgeting range, not a quote. Removal, excavation, base preparation, access, thickness, reinforcement and finish all affect the final price.

Common questions

How much does exposed aggregate concrete cost?
Exposed aggregate concrete generally runs $15–$20 per square foot on projects of approximately 1,000 square feet or more, which places it between a broom finish ($8–$11 per square foot new) and stamped concrete ($20–$30). The aggregate selected, depth of the wash and the amount of border detail affect where you land. Smaller projects are priced individually, with a $2,500 minimum for concrete installation projects.
Is exposed aggregate more expensive than a broom finish?
Yes, somewhat. It requires additional material and labor to retard, wash and detail the surface. It generally costs less than stamped concrete, which is why many homeowners choose it when they want something better looking than plain concrete without the price and maintenance of a stamped patio.
How does exposed aggregate hold up to Michigan winters?
Very well when it is built correctly. It is a full-depth concrete slab, so its durability comes from the base, thickness, jointing and drainage, not the finish. The textured surface also disguises the minor weathering that shows up more obviously on smooth concrete.
Is exposed aggregate hard to clean?
It is easier than people expect. The texture hides dirt between cleanings, and it rinses down with a hose or a low-pressure wash. Keeping it sealed makes cleaning easier and protects the surface.
Can exposed aggregate be combined with other finishes?
Yes. Broom-finished or smooth borders and bands around an exposed aggregate field are a common way to frame a patio and line up the joint layout at the same time.
